Texas A&M's 4-4 record and 1-4 standing in SEC play have been highly disappointing, as coach Mike Elko's third year at the helm has been plagued by several offseason decisions, including elevating Holmon Wiggins, Lyle Hemphill, and Joey Lynch as the program's OC, DC, and quarterbacks coach, instead of hiring outside veteran options.
The Aggies' No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class isn't at risk of falling apart, even after four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside flipped his commitment to Miami, as several insiders, including AggieYell's (subscription required) Jaxson Callaway, who recently spoke to four-star safety JayQuan Snell, who is widely considered the best safety prospect in Texas, and recently shut down his recruitment.
Read the full article here for quotes on Snell's strong relationship with Mike Elko and safeties coach Ishmael Aristide, as he continues to dominate his senior season at Waxahachie and prepares to take on Duncanville this weekend.
Considered one of the vocal leaders in the 2027 class, Snell shared the message the Aggie coaching staff continues to spread to all 25 commits: focus on the program's future, not one bad season that could change on a dime this time next year.
“We didn’t commit because they were winning games or because they were losing games. We committed because we love the culture of the school. We love the staff. We love the vibe. Not just what we got in the football program, but everything outside of football. That was the vibe. We got a good vibe from it, and so that was the reason why we committed."
If this message comes through, I doubt we'll see much, if any, movement in the Aggies' 2027 cycle, no matter the Aggies' 2026 record, which could easily end at 4-8 if the team continues its poor play after the bye week. With five-star safety Kamarui Dorsey, Texas A&M's future safety duo could be elite over the next two seasons.
