No. 25 Boise State (7-1) at Colorado State (3-5)
Date & Time: Saturday, November 7, 3:00 p.m. PT
Network: USA Network
Spread: Boise State -17.5, O/U 68.5
Preview: Seven straight wins, an undefeated conference record, and a spot in the first College Football Playoff Rankings. Life is pretty good for Boise State, but as the Broncos prepare for a trip to Fort Collins, an injury could complicate their pursuit of a Pac-12 Championship.
The Broncos have been unstoppable, averaging 37.1 points per game in the seven-game winning streak. The Broncos have also scored at least 31 points in every victory, something the program hasn’t accomplished in consecutive games since 2014.
The latest victory for Boise State came with an injury to quarterback Maddux Madsen. He exited in the fourth quarter, and that forced Max Cutforth into action. Cutforth delivered three touchdown passes in the final six minutes to win in comeback fashion, 46-45 against Texas State. Cutforth isn’t a stranger to stepping up; he started three games last season while Madsen was injured.
The Broncos have one of the best running backs in the country in Dylan Riley. Riley ranks second with 1,049 rushing yards in the country and has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season.
Meanwhile, Colorado State returns to Fort Collins looking to bounce back from its worst offensive performance of the season.
After averaging nearly 39 points through their first seven games, the Rams only scored 14 points and had 263 total yards in last week’s 31-14 loss to Utah State. The absence of running back Mel Brown didn’t help an offense that has been explosive otherwise.
You can’t count out Colorado State just yet. All three of the Rams’ wins this season have been at home. Running back Durell Robinson has also reached paydirt in six straight games, tying Riley for the conference lead with nine rushing touchdowns.
History isn’t on Colorado State’s side. The Rams have lost 27 consecutive games against ranked opponents, and their last ranked victory was against Colorado in 2002.
Boise State has the talent and momentum, but with the quarterback situation up in the air, Colorado State could make things interesting if the offense returns to form.
Prediction: Boise State 38, Colorado State 24
Fresno State (5-3) at Utah State (3-5)
Date & Time: Saturday, November 7, 6:30 p.m. PT
Network: USA Network
Spread: Fresno State -2.5, O/U 42.5
Preview: Fresno State is one win away from bowl eligibility, while Utah State is beginning to find its rhythm. Both teams sit at 2-2 in conference play, making Saturday night’s matchup a game with big implications for the conference standings.
After losing two consecutive games, Fresno State bounced back with an impressive 38-22 victory against Oregon State. The Bulldogs have now won five games this season, all by at least 14 points, and are looking to get bowl-eligible for the sixth straight year.
Quarterback Jayden Mandal was the difference maker against Oregon State, throwing for 202 yards and two touchdowns while adding another two scores on the ground. Running back Bryson Donelson also delivered his best rushing performance of the season, finishing with 108 yards and a touchdown.
Replicating that offensive success won’t be easy against a Utah State defense that has been playing some of its best football to this point in the season.
The Aggies have held three consecutive opponents under 300 yards of total offense, something the program has accomplished only twice in the last 30 seasons. Utah State limited a Colorado State offense averaging 38.6 points per game to just 14 points.
Utah State is allowing just 21.9 points per game, while Fresno State allows 28.9 points per game. Something will have to give between these two defenses.
The biggest development for Utah State might be on the other side of the ball. Quarterback McCae Hillstead returned to the starting lineup against Colorado State for the first time since Week 1 and immediately provided a spark. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 79 yards and another score.
The Aggies finished with season-highs in points, total offense, and rushing yards, offering some hope that the offense might be turning a corner.
The Aggies won last year’s meeting 28-17 in Fresno, but the Bulldogs enter Saturday with momentum following a big win over Oregon State. Fresno State has been consistent offensively, but Utah State’s improvements behind Hillstead could make it a difficult road test for the Bulldogs.
Prediction: Utah State 24, Fresno State 21
Texas State (4-4) at Oregon State (5-3)
Date & Time: Saturday, November 7, 7:30 p.m. PT
Network: CW
Spread: Oregon State -6.5, O/U 70.5
Preview: If you like offense, you will want to spend your Saturday night tuned into this matchup.
Both Texas State and Oregon State are coming off heartbreaking losses, but with two of the most explosive quarterbacks in the country, don’t be surprised if 100 points are scored in this game. I’m not even joking.
Texas State enters Saturday looking to bounce back from one of the wildest games of the college football season. The Bobcats were trailing against Boise State 28-3 at halftime, and they stormed back with 36 unanswered points before ultimately losing 46-45. In the second half, Texas State scored 42 points and had 312 total yards.
Quarterback Brad Jackson led the comeback effort, throwing for 327 yards and four touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground. All five touchdowns came in the second half. Jackson has now thrown at least four touchdowns in three games this season, tied for the most in the FBS. He’s also the only quarterback with at least 1,900 passing yards and 400 rushing yards.
If there’s a quarterback who can match the production of Jackson, it’s Oregon State’s Braden Atkinson.
Despite having their five-game winning streak snapped against Fresno State, the Beavers have plenty of reasons to feel confident going back home.
Atkinson leads the nation with 2,977 passing yards and 25 touchdowns. His 373-yard performance against Fresno State marked his eighth consecutive game with at least 300 passing yards, which set a new Oregon State record.
You can’t talk about the Beavers without mentioning true freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree. He has been nothing short of spectacular, leading the nation with 1,110 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. Although Fresno State snapped his seven-game streak of recording at least 100 receiving yards and a touchdown, Legree is still two scores away from tying Brandin Cooks’ single-season school record.
The Beavers have also been dominant at home, winning their last three games in Corvallis by a combined score of 166-61. Still, the Bobcats proved against Boise State that no deficit is too large for this offense to overcome.
The biggest question is which defense can get enough stops. Both quarterbacks can take over a game, and with an over/under of 70.5 points, expectations are high. There will be plenty of fireworks.
Predictions: Oregon State 45, Texas State 38
