Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class has once again taken center stage amid the Aggies' struggles on the field this season, as coach Mike Elko's third season at the helm has been an utter disaster, thanks to a set of poor decisions this offseason, especially bringing back redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who, despite throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, threw two interceptions and zero touchdowns in losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP.
The assumption is that Marcel Reed will not be with the program next season, and for all 26 of the Aggies' 2027 commits, next year's roster will likely look very different, especially on offense, which could include first-year OC Holmon Wiggins moving on.
The program's top-ranked commit, five-star OT Mark Matthews, could visit Texas A&M this weekend when the Aggies host The Citadel, or possibly make the trip to Miami to watch the Hurricanes host Florida State. With four-star linebacker and Aggie commit Aston Whiteside visiting the Hurricanes this weekend, could Matthews follow suit soon? It's a possibility.
If Matthews visits Texas A&M this weekend, Aggie Yell insider Jaxson Callaway still feels confident that, due to Matthews' strong relationship with offensive line coach Adam Cushing, Texas A&M's struggles this season won't have a direct impact on his commitment, while Rivals insider Steve Wiltfong agrees and is also confident that Matthews will make his way to College Station this weekend.
"The Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas product committed to Texas A&M in May and is expected back in College Station this weekend for the game against The Citadel. Similar to Jacobs, this is one Miami has worked to keep warm but to date there is no indication Matthews is wavering on his pledge to the Aggies. We’ll see if he shows up at a game before season’s end."
Keeping Mark Matthews, along with fellow five-star OL Kennedy Brown and four-star OL commits Kaden Scott and DeMarrion Johnson, is a top priority for Mike Elko and Adam Cushing.
