Texas Tech football didn’t need an explosive offensive night to remain unbeaten Saturday. Its defense took care of that.

The No. 12 Red Raiders intercepted four passes, turned Colorado turnovers into 19 points and erased an early deficit on the way to a 29-7 victory at Folsom Field.

Texas Tech improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, reaching 5-0 for the second consecutive season.

“Whew. Some really ugly football at times,” Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said. “Just finding a way to win the game.”

That’s exactly what Tech did.

Colorado struck first when new starting quarterback Isaac Wilson connected with Joseph Williams for an 8-yard touchdown on the opening possession.

The Buffaloes took a 7-3 advantage into halftime and actually finished with a 375-315 edge in total offense.

None of it mattered once the turnovers started piling up.

Cornerback Brice Pollock intercepted two passes, while Malik Esquerra added another pick.

Then linebacker John Curry delivered the knockout blow, reading Wilson in the fourth quarter and returning an interception for a touchdown.

“I jumped up and he just threw it right to me,” Curry said. “It was pretty awesome.”

Texas Tech's defense didn't allow another point after Colorado’s opening drive.

The offense eventually provided enough support.

Quarterback Will Hammond completed 17 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Terrance Carter Jr. for an 11-yard score late in the third quarter that gave Tech its first touchdown and a 12-7 lead.

Quinten Joyner later broke a 30-yard touchdown run as the Red Raiders pulled away with 17 fourth-quarter points.

Colorado hurt itself repeatedly. The Buffaloes threw four interceptions, missed two field goals and committed eight penalties for 84 yards.

Texas Tech simply kept taking advantage.

The victory also carried historical significance for McGuire. He improved to 40-18 at Texas Tech, becoming the fastest Red Raiders coach to reach 40 wins by doing it in his first 58 games.
