The Texas Longhorns will spend the early part of the week waiting for a key injury update from the Mississippi State Bulldogs as Steve Sarkisian’s team prepares for Saturday’s home game.

Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby said Monday that starting quarterback Kamario Taylor’s status remains uncertain after he aggravated a right foot injury in Saturday’s loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.

“We’re still in the process of looking at everything,” Lebby said. “He is doing good. His spirits are good, but as we continue to move forward, I think we’ll know a lot more here in the next 48 hours.”

Lebby’s timeline for any Taylor announcement could leave Texas and head coach Sarkisian waiting until midweek to learn which Mississippi State quarterback they will likely face on Saturday.

Taylor first suffered the turf toe injury in a Sept. 26 win over the Missouri Tigers. The quarterback played through the issue against the Alabama Crimson Tide, but missed the loss to the LSU Tigers a week later before attempting to return against Oklahoma.

That comeback lasted only 12 plays. Taylor completed two of five passes for 10 yards before aggravating the injury while scrambling. He needed help leaving the field and later watched from the sideline in a walking boot.

Lebby confirmed after the Oklahoma game that Taylor had not suffered a new injury, saying, “It was reaggravating.”

Fellow quarterback Billy Puckett has handled most of the work in Taylor’s absence, completing 41 of 64 passes for 368 yards this season, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions across four games.

Texas enters the matchup at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play after beating Ole Miss 34-27, with the Longhorns hosting Mississippi State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
