Texas' Colin Simmons receives penalty 'for simulating using the restroom' during record-tying 5-sack game vs. Tennessee

Texas edge Colin Simmons pissed away a 16-yard sack late in the first half Saturday at Tennessee, where he was credited with a program-record-tying five sacks in three quarters and change.

As it had most of the day, Longhorns pressure enveloped Volunteers freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon late in the second quarter on a third-and-13. Simmons, a junior who authored a 12-sack season in 2025, finished the job.

He brought down Brandon for a loss of 16 yards that dropped Tennessee to its own 12-yard line and to a daunting fourth-and-29, with Texas already leading 10-3.

But then Simmons pretended to spray Shields–Watkins Field in Neyland Stadium with urine.

That vulgar behavior resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Simmons received "for simulating using the restroom," according to referee Kyle Olson.

What appeared to be a dead drive suddenly regained life. Tennessee was gifted a first down because of the infraction.

It seemed as though the Vols were going to make Simmons pay right away. They passed midfield in a blink, thanks to 10-yard completions to wide receivers Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews and a couple chunk gains from running back Daune Morris.

Even with that momentous surge, the series stalled at the Texas 34-yard line, as Tennessee turned the ball over on downs. Brandon's fourth-and-7 deep shot for Staley was broken up by Texas' Graceson Littleton.

The Longhorns went into intermission still ahead 10-3.

Simmons accounted for two of the Longhorns' three first-half sacks on Saturday. In the process, he doubled his season total. He previously recorded sacks in Texas' win over then-No. 1 Ohio State on Sept. 12 and in a blowout victory versus UTSA last week.

Simmons added three more sacks in the second half against the Vols.

He's one of Texas' best players and regarded as a team leader, too. In fact, Simmons was one of the Longhorns' four captains on Saturday in Knoxville.

Fortunately for the upperclassman, his boneheaded first-half penalty didn't lead to Tennessee points. There could be other consequences, however, even after a performance in which he tied Texas’ single-game sack record.
