Texas A&M is going back to basics this weekend. The Aggies will wear a classic look featuring maroon helmets, maroon jerseys, and white pants when they host The Citadel on Saturday afternoon. I think this is the right move for a team that needs to find its footing again.
The team is currently sitting at 3-3 overall and 1-3 in SEC play. After a tough 27-6 loss to Missouri in Week 6, the program needs to stop looking for gimmicks and start focusing on the fundamentals. The new, simple uniform style matches what the team needs to do on the field.
A return to the maroon and white
Texas A&M Football shared a video on social media showing freshman KJ Edwards modeling the upcoming kit. The look uses the traditional maroon helmet and jersey paired with white pants. It is a timeless combination that avoids the flashy trends seen elsewhere in college football.
For example, Yahoo Sports noted that Coastal Carolina is using 90s-themed uniforms for their game against Appalachian State. While some fans like the show, the Aggies should focus on stability. The team is facing a Citadel defense that Yahoo Sports reports is undersized and lacks the speed to stop a strong run game.
Focusing on the run game
The strategy for Saturday should be simple. The Aggies need to establish the ground game to move the chains. Most of the snaps are expected to go to freshman KJ Edwards and running back Jamarion Morrow. This is a huge opportunity for the offense to bounce back after a poor showing against Missouri.
The numbers from the previous week show why this matters. According to Yahoo Sports, the running game only managed 29 yards against Missouri. If the Aggies can use their size advantage against the smaller Citadel players, they can control the clock. Coach Mike Elko is also looking for a response from starting quarterback Marcel Reed following recent struggles in the SEC.
Depth and roster stability
While Marcel Reed is expected to start, the game could provide playing time for others. If the Aggies build a large lead in the first half, backup QB Brady Hart might see action. Even freshman Helaman Casuga could enter the game if the lead grows significantly.
The focus remains on finding consistency. The program is currently dealing with the pressure of SEC play. Even if Reed plays well in the pocket, the team still has a long road ahead in the conference. The goal for Saturday is simply to win and move past the recent 27-6 defeat.
