Texas A&M didn’t dominate the stat sheet against Arizona State. It dominated the moments that decided the game.

The No. 10 Aggies turned a four-point game into a rout Saturday, exploding for 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat Arizona State 48-20 at Kyle Field and improve to 2-0.

Arizona State actually outgained Texas A&M 369-255 and finished with two more first downs. None of it mattered once Mike Elko’s defense started taking the football away.

The Sun Devils committed four turnovers, including two interceptions thrown by quarterback Cutter Boley and two lost fumbles.

Texas A&M gave it away only once, providing the Aggies with the short fields and extra possessions needed to break open a game that remained 24-20 late in the third quarter.

Quarterback Marcel Reed didn’t put up huge yardage numbers, but he was effective where it mattered. Reed completed 15 of 25 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns, overcoming one interception while helping Texas A&M repeatedly cash in around the goal line.

Wide receiver Isaiah Horton caught two of Reed’s touchdown passes, including scores of 4 and 13 yards.

Arizona State showed early that its Week 1 offensive explosion wasn’t simply a product of inferior competition.

Boley completed 21 of 34 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Reed Harris was nearly unstoppable. Harris caught nine passes for 189 yards and two scores, including a 58-yard touchdown late in the third quarter that pulled the Sun Devils within four.

That was as close as Arizona State would get.

Texas A&M responded by taking complete control in the fourth quarter, turning defensive stops and Sun Devils mistakes into a 24-point avalanche.

The Aggies also played an exceptionally clean game. Texas A&M was flagged only once for five yards, compared with nine Arizona State penalties for 62 yards.

The rushing attack remains an area to watch. A&M managed just 92 yards on 35 attempts, averaging 2.6 yards per carry. Rueben Owens II led the Aggies with 35 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

But this game belonged to the defense.

Arizona State produced more yards, more first downs and several explosive plays. Texas A&M produced the statistic that mattered most: four takeaways.

And once the Aggies smelled blood in the fourth quarter, the competitive portion of the afternoon ended quickly.
