Texas A&M's 2026 season isn't just a massive disappointment; third-year coach Mike Elko's constant backing up starting quarterback Marcel Reed is both confusing and telling, especially since sophomore backup QB Brady Hart likely isn't ready to take over as the starter.

On Saturday, Marcel Reed made his ninth start of the season against No. 21 South Carolina, and similar to the Aggies' Week 8 road loss to Alabama, the senior signal caller looked confident, completing a high percentage of his passes and leading the offense to three field goals in the first half.

Marcel Reed finished 25/43 for 221 yards, was sacked twice, and ran for his life in the second half as the offensive line failed to hold up in pass protection when needed. However, Texas A&M's third straight failure to score touchdowns in SEC play was both record-setting and a clear sign that changes are needed before the offseason.

Elko's decision to elevate Holmon Wiggins as the program's offensive coordinator with zero play-calling experience has not helped Marcel Reed match his 2025 production, but after the 17-9 road loss became final, Mike Elko praised his veteran QB during the post-game press conference.

"I thought he played well… I thought that was his best game of the year, and I thought we operated, for the most part, better than we have for most of the year."

It's fair to say that Marcel Reed played above-average football for most of the game, but after failing to score a touchdown on several attempts in the red zone, including the Aggies' final possession, Reed threw multiple uncatchable balls.

It's worrisome that Mike Elko keeps praising Reed, who hasn't led a touchdown drive in road losses to LSU, Missouri, and South Carolina and has regressed in every fourth quarter. It's hard to see a world where Texas A&M runs it back with Reed for a final season, but anything is possible, and I highly doubt he won't remain the starter for the final three games.
