How many times do we think Lane Kiffin has watched the Zapruder film? You just know this guy has some JFK second-shooter theories.
I don’t even want to know what Kiffin thinks about the moon landing.
Kiffin unleashed a conspiracy theory of his own in the run-up to LSU hosting Alabama in a critical Week 10 rivalry clash Nov. 7.
Alabama vs LSU predictions: Can Tide justify controversial CFP ranking?
Toppmeyer: SEC coaches can put away the pacifiers. CFP committee loves them
The rivalry game will kick off in the afternoon in Baton Rouge instead of at night.
Coincidence? Kiffin thinks not.
He’s sees this as more evidence the SEC is out to get LSU.
“Obviously, the SEC wanted to change this year from how it had been to give LSU less advantage,” Kiffin said, “(considering) how well LSU plays at night and how intimidating it is to play here.
“So, I guess when I look at it that way, I’m not surprised.”
Kiffin added anyone who believes the SEC wants LSU to succeed “must have just been on Mars the last four months.”
Lest you think Kiffin is all doom and gloom, he later came up with a potential solution for how LSU fans could create a nighttime-esque environment for a daytime kick at Tiger Stadium.
“Start your day earlier,” Kiffin suggested. “Have breakfast earlier. Start drinking earlier. Whatever it is that your routine is, just move it up. Go to bed earlier Friday night. That’s my message to our fans.”
As far as conspiracy theories go, this one’s got some legs to it.
This rivalry typically occurs at night. LSU last hosted Alabama for an afternoon kickoff in 2010. Since then, all LSU games against Alabama at Tiger Stadium were at night. Until now.
Kiffin is correct that Tiger Stadium becomes a much fiercer venue at night, when the decibels crank up alongside fans’ blood-alcohol content.
LSU and the SEC remain locked in a feud, after the Tigers plotted to roster prohibited players in multiple sports, including football.
The school-vs.-conference imbroglio continues to play out in court, while Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry fills the role of carnival barker.
The temperature got hottest a couple of months ago, but egos on all sides undoubtedly remain bruised.
So, what do we think of Kiffin’s theory? Is the Birmingham Boogeyman out to get LSU?
Our ruling on Lane Kiffin’s Alabama-LSU conspiracy theory
Here’s the first thing you need to know: The SEC office and its television partner (ESPN/ABC) collaborate on game times. Commissioner Greg Sankey does not wield unilateral power to determine kick times.
Here’s the second thing you need to know: This weekend is the best collection of games, inside the SEC and beyond, of the entire regular season. Alabama-LSU didn’t get bumped out of prime time by a couple of directional schools. The nighttime lineup features top-15 matchups up and down the card.
Miami-Notre Dame.
Kentucky-Tennessee.
Georgia-Mississippi.
There’s probably a joke in there somewhere about how Ole Miss needed to lose Kiffin to finally get some prime-time love. Maybe the SEC is not out to get an entire school, but rather it’s out to get one man. Kiffin. How’s that for a conspiracy theory?!
Here’s the third thing you need to know: Tennessee, which landed the ESPN draw for its rivalry game against Kentucky, was due for a night game. The Vols previously hosted Texas at noon ET and played Auburn and Alabama in 3:30 kickoffs. This will be Tennessee’s first night game at Neyland Stadium this season.
LSU hosted Clemson and Texas A&M at night in September. It has another opportunity for a night game next week against Texas. Kickoff time for that game has not been set.
Here’s the fourth thing you need to know: Want to know who really got hosed? Undefeated Utah. In a clash of top-10 teams, the Utes will kick off their ABC-televised rivalry game against Brigham Young at 10 a.m. local time in Salt Lake City.
So, what’s my verdict?: Insufficient proof of a conspiracy.
What's Lane Kiffin really up to?
I’ve got a conspiracy theory about Kiffin’s conspiracy theory.
Kiffin specializes in narrative shaping.
In the run-up to LSU-Ole Miss, he tried to speak into existence that “really, the pressure’s on” the Rebels.
Nice try, but nobody believed that.
In this instance, Kiffin is laying some preemptive groundwork for an excuse if LSU loses to Alabama. Don't blame me. The SEC shafted us by making us play in the dreaded sunlight!
In a similar vein, Kiffin polished up Alabama. He called the Crimson Tide “loaded” and hailed them as “the most talented team we’ve played.” He raved about Alabama’s defense, which he said “reminds me of old Alabama defenses.”
Alabama’s defense ranks eighth in the SEC, if you’re wondering.
Kiffin might be the only person on the planet who looks at this Alabama defense and sees a vintage Saban defense.
If you listened to Kiffin, you might believe this is a classic David vs. Goliath matchup, and poor David won't even get to wage his attack under the cover of darkness, because the mean men in SEC HQ teamed up with Goliath.
Lane would love an excuse if LSU loses, so he spotlighted attention on to the rare daytime kickoff and planted the seed of a conspiracy theory.
That’s my theory, anyway.
Now, ask me who shot JFK.
