But in the process, JMU now finds itself on the brink of losing out on returning to the 12-team postseason. The Dukes winning out certainly would’ve boosted their chances to make it in. Last year’s Dukes led by former coach Bob Chesney went 12-1 during the regular season to swoop up the 12th seed, ultimately falling to Oregon 51-34 in Eugene.

Now Appalachian State’s upset bodes greatly for other aspiring Group of Five members. Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) of out the American Athletic Conference (AAC) now watches its chances boost as a 6-1 team entering Saturday. And the Roadrunners will face last season’s 11th seed in the playoffs and defending AAC champ Tulane next.

But the Mountain West Conference features three aspiring CFP hopefuls. New member North Dakota State owns the best mark at 6-1. Yet Air Force and New Mexico don’t trail far at 5-1.

Boise State out of the eight-member Pac-12, though, remains the trending favorite to represent the G5 teams in the playoffs. The 5-1 Broncos face Washington State and alumnus turned Cougars head coach Kirby Moore Saturday.

App State head coach Dowell Loggains earns his biggest win of his coaching career. He leaned into quarterback Malachi Singleton and his 271-yard, two touchdown night to win. Receivers Nate Branch and Sam Pickett combined for 12 catches for 136 yards.
