Texas A&M football finally gets to stop talking about potential and start proving it Saturday night.

The No. 8 Aggies open the 2026 season against Missouri State at Kyle Field with Mike Elko’s program carrying expectations that look very different after last year’s breakthrough.

Texas A&M finished 11-2, reached the College Football Playoff for the first time and now brings back quarterback Marcel Reed to lead an offense expected to keep the Aggies in the national conversation.

But Elko isn’t interested in living off 2025.

“We’ve done what we’ve had to do to get to this point, now it’s time to go play,” Elko said this week.

That puts the spotlight directly on Reed, who begins his second season as Texas A&M’s full-time starter after throwing for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. He also rushed for six scores, giving the Aggies one of the SEC’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks.

Missouri State coach Casey Woods isn’t pretending Reed is an easy problem to solve.

“I don’t know that you can stop Marcel Reed,” Woods said.

The bigger question for Texas A&M may be what happens in front of him. The Aggies rebuilt most of their offensive line during the offseason, with veteran center Mark Nabou Jr. serving as the key holdover.

Elko attacked the transfer portal for experienced help, but Saturday will be the first real test of whether that rebuilt group can protect Reed and establish the run.

On paper, this should be a comfortable opener. Missouri State is entering only its second season at the FBS level after finishing 7-6 in 2025.

Woods, formerly SMU’s offensive coordinator, is making his head-coaching debut. The Aggies entered game week as roughly a 40-point favorite.

That margin, however, isn’t really the story.

Texas A&M needs to look like a team capable of handling bigger games ahead. The Aggies need clean quarterback play, a functional offensive line, defensive urgency and the kind of early dominance expected from a top-10 team.

The night will also carry some history. Texas A&M unveiled a statue of legendary coach R.C. Slocum outside Kyle Field on Friday. Slocum, the winningest coach in program history with 123 victories, will be honored during the first quarter Saturday.

For Elko and the Aggies, the message is simple ... 2025 raised the ceiling. Saturday begins the job of proving they belong there.
