A massive matchup for Big 12 superiority is set for Saturday night as Houston visits Utah. It is time to continue the NCAA Football odds series with a Houston-Utah prediction and pick.
Houston enters the game at 6-1 on the season. They opened up with wins over Oregon State and Southern before hitting the road for the first time to face Texas Tech. Houston put up a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and still led 17-14 at the end of the first half. Still, the Red Raiders came back and had a lead in the fourth. Conner Weidman found Patrick Overmyer for a touchdown with 49 seconds left, but they failed on the two-point conversion, leading to a narrow win for Texas Tech, 28-26. Houston has since won four in a row, with wins over Georgia Southern, UCF, and Kansas State. Last week, Houston fended off a comeback effort from Oklahoma State, winning 35-32.
Meanwhile, Utah is a perfect 6-0 on the year, and for the most part, the games have not been in question. After an opening win over Idaho, they beat Arkansas by 33, Utah State by 333, Iowa State by 14, and Kansas by 17. Last week was a different story, though, taking on Colorado on the road. Utah had a 13-0 lead at halftime, but Colorado scored 17 straight to open the second half to take the lead. Utah answered with two scores of their own, but Colorado stuck around, as the Utes held on to a tight win, 27-24.

Keys to Houston vs. Utah matchup
For Houston, everything starts with Conner Weigman. The quarterback has completed 67.7 percent of his passes this year for 1,771 yards and 20 touchdowns. He has also thrown just two interceptions. further, he has run for 229 yards and six scores. One of the major reasons for the success of Weigman has been his protection, which is aided by a strong ground game. Makhi Hughes has run for 464 yards and three scores, while Re’Shaun Sanford II has run for 440 yards and two scores. While Amare Thomas will be the focus on the Utah defense in the passing game, they have to be smart with their safeties. Pushing them up to defend the run or doubling Thomas will leave Patrick Overmyer open. He has already hauled in 38 receptions for 432 yards and seven scores, causing issues for every defense.
On defense, slowing down Utah will not be easy, but they have to cause discomfort for Devon Dampier. Houston is 91st in the nation in sack rate, and 130th against the pass this year. Dampier has thrown for 1,412 yards with 15 scores while being sacked ten times. All four of his interceptions have come under pressure this year as well. Still, they have to be sound in keeping gap discipline when rushing the passer. Dampier can scramble away, as seen by his 198 yards and three scores on the ground.
For Utah, they are facing one of the best run defenses in the nation. Houston is 14th against the run this year and will be trying to make Utah one-dimensional. This will be the job of Wayshawn Parker. He has run for 597 yards this year with seven touchdowns. Only twice this year has Parker averaged under five yards per carry and also not scored. One of those was against Utah State, where the Utes were in control early, limiting his touchdowns. The other was this past game agaisnt Colorado. Parker ran the ball 98 times, but averaged just 4.3 yards per carry and was held out of the end zone. If Utah cannot have their star running back have a big game, it could be a long day for the offense.
On defense, Utah is also phenomenal against the run and needs to force Houston into long third-down conversions. Utah is fifth in the nation against the run this year, and 19th on third-down conversions. They are also ninth in opponent red zone scoring, with opponents trying to pass in condensed areas in the red zone. Houston has two solid running backs, but if Utah can slow them down and force Weigman into obvious passing situations, the Utes will thrive. Safeties Rabbit Evans and Jackson Bennee will play a major role in this regard. Evans has 24 tackles this year, with many in the run game, while also having two interceptions and a pass breakup. Bennee has 24 tackles with five pass breakups and two interceptions. The two of them will need to help with both the run game and against Thomas and Overmyer.
Houston vs. Utah Prediction and Pick
Utah opened as a 7.5-point favorite, but this has dropped below the critical seven-point line. This game is going to come down to third downs and the red zone. Houston has converted third downs at a 57.5 percent rate this year, the best in the nation, but has often had to settle for three instead of six. They are 98th in the nation in red zone scoring. Meanwhile, Utah is 13th in the nation in third-down conversions and 27th in red zone scoring. Further, they are one of the best on defense in both categories. With Houston settling for more field goals while Utah is putting up touchdowns, that will be the difference in the game. Meanwhile, both teams will be putting on methodical drives that chew clock, while trying to wear down two great defenses, leading to a lower-scoring game.
Final Houston vs. Utah Prediction and Pick: Utah -6.5 (-120) and Under 56.5 (-105)
