No. 17 Florida has a big decision to make at quarterback this week before they travel to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta to face No. 3 Georgia on Saturday.
Freshman Tramell Jones Jr. got the start in Florida's win over Texas on the road in Austin on October 17. He went 22 of 35 passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns while adding 41 yards on the ground in the Gators' 27-24 win.
Philo was sidelined for that game after suffering a shoulder injury in the Gators' 38-19 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 10.
On Monday, Gators head coach Jon Sumrall told reporters that both quarterbacks would be available to play the rival Bulldogs. Per Scott Carter of the Gators, Sumrall said he'd "probably" know who would get the start against Georgia by Wednesday. He's not planning to make an announcement before the game.
Philo has completed 70.5% of his passes for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. He's added 104 yards and three scores on the ground.
Jones has completed 70.3% of his throws for 407 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. Jones has rushed for 66 yards on the ground.
Philo earned the starting job out of training camp in part because of his familiarity with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner's system, as the two came to Florida in the offseason after spending time together at Georgia Tech.
Jones proved to be a competent quarterback in Florida's win over Texas.
The Gators will enter Saturday's contest with a 5-2 record and No. 17 ranking against the 6-1 Bulldogs. A win would boost Florida's resume for the College Football Playoff. A loss could end their hopes before playing Oklahoma and No. 9 Kentucky to start November.
Florida could make a bold choice to go with the hot hand and play Jones against the Bulldogs.
Can Florida beat Georgia?
Florida has not beaten Georgia since 2020 and has lost eight of its last nine contests against the rival Bulldogs. Florida's 44 points in the win over the Bulldogs in 2020 was the only time the Gators have put up more than 20 points since 2016.
To put it simply, the quarterback decision is a big deal for the Gators because they're going to have to score points on Kirby Smart's defense to win the game.
Running back Jadan Baugh will be an asset for Florida, but Jones or Philo will have to play complementary football to get a win.
