As the Florida football team started quarterback Tramell Jones as Aaron Philo works back from his injury, he had a tough task leading the Gators against the University of Texas on Saturday afternoon. In the SEC showdown between the unranked Florida football program and the No. 7-ranked Longhorns, the Gators came out on top, with Jones having an impressive performance, even outshining Arch Manning.
In the win for the Gators, Jones would throw for 155 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions on 22 completions out of 35 pass attempts, to go along with 41 yards on the ground on 10 attempts. As for Manning, he had another up-and-down outing, throwing for 173 yards and a touchdown pass on 14 completions out of 20 attempts.
“Florida QB Tramell Jones in its upset win over No. 7 Texas: 22/35 Passing…196 Total Yards…2 TDs,” Hayes Fawcett on On3 Sports wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “The Gators beat Texas for the 2nd year in a row…What a win for Sumrall and company.”

To add to Manning’s frustrating performance, he would also have a costly fumble with under two minutes left in the game as the Longhorns were looking to take the lead or at least tie the game at 27 a piece. However, the fumble would give the ball back to the Gators to run out the clock and take the upset.

More on Florida football’s win over the Longhorns
This is no doubt a huge win for Jones, as he was filling in for Philo after he sustained a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of the Florida football team’s 38-19 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. One of Jones’ sole roles for the contest against the Longhorns was to manage a steady game, and he did just that with his performance.
It helped that he was facing a Texas team that showed their flaws and deficiencies in the prior week, when they lost to another unranked team in the Oklahoma Sooners. With the Gators getting the win over the ranked Longhorns, it remains to be seen if Philo will be healthy or if Jones will start again on Oct. 31 against the Georgia Bulldogs.
