Through the first seven games of the 2026 season, Florida's head coach Jon Sumrall has already eclipsed the program's win total from 2025.
The Gators raced out to a 4-0 start before suffering consecutive losses against Missouri and South Carolina, then upsetting Texas on the road. Despite those setbacks, ESPN's midseason evaluations of first-year Power Four coaches suggest Gator Nation has reasons to be encouraged.
Florida's offense has flourished under new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, one of Sumrall's most consequential offseason hires. The unit has scored 214 points through its first four games and is averaging 7.6 yards per play. Faulkner has been instrumental in generating explosive plays by creatively utilizing playmakers such as Jadan Baugh, Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III. The Gators are tied for No. 19 in FBS with 38 plays gaining at least 20 yards.
Discipline has emerged as a glaring weakness during Sumrall's first season. ESPN notes Florida has committed 55 penalties and 74.6 penalty yards per game, placing the Gators near the bottom of the national rankings. Defensive coordinator Brad White's unit has also struggled with consistency, allowing 403.8 yards per game (No. 85 nationally) and allowing opponents to score on 75% of red-zone possessions.
"The Gators defense has struggled at times in SEC play, although it rebounded nicely against Texas and quarterback Arch Manning, allowing only 272 yards. Florida had no answers for Missouri's offensive backfield of Austin Simmons and Jamal Roberts in a 45-17 loss, and then really struggled against South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who had four touchdown passes and no interceptions," ESPN college football reporter Adam Rittenberg wrote.
After floundering in recent years, UF is showing legitimate progress under Sumrall. While the team has shown flashes of high-level play, restoring consistency from week to week will help to reestablish Florida as a national championship contender. Emphatic victories over Ole Miss and Texas demonstrate potential, while blowout losses to Missouri and South Carolina expose the gap for Sumrall's Gators.
