The East Forsyth JV football team dominated the second half and claimed a 42-20 win over Parkland on Thursday night.
The game was scheduled to be played at East Forsyth, but a power outage at the back part of the school prompted moving the game to Walkertown, Eagles JV coach Jimmy Eaton said.
“Around 2 p.m. there was a power surge and the power went out at part of the school. The majority of the school still had power but the coaches’ office, field house, lights and scoreboard at the football field did not,” he said.
Tripp Honeycutt, the head football coach for Walkertown, offered Walkertown’s field because his team was on a bye week.
“It was very nice of them to let us play there, and all the volunteers we had lined up for the game were able to get over to Walkertown,” he said.
East started the game in the best possible way.
“Jay Harris ran the ball back 73-yards for a touchdown on the opening kickoff and Mason Harding ran in for the two-point conversion. So we were up 8-0 after 11 seconds,” Eaton said.
Parkland scored on a run with 8:46 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 8-6. Before the end of the first quarter, a three-yard touchdown run by Ta’Jae Clark capped off a 10-play, 65-yard drive to give East a 14-6 lead. With 3:40 left in the half, quarterback Peyton Beal threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Trenton Avent to give the Eagles a 20-6 lead. In the final minute, the Mustangs cut the lead to 20-14 with a short touchdown run and a two point conversion.
The Eagles improved their play, Eaton said.
“That was the best Parkland team I have seen since I have been coaching, and I was excited to see the guys step up. We had some guys out at key spots, but the other kids stepped up big time. Peyton Beal stepped in at quarterback for us and played great. At halftime, I told them we have been in this spot before and lost. We can let it happen again or go out and dominate, and we definitely did,” Eaton said.
At the start of the third quarter, East Forsyth got a quick stop on defense and then got a 51-yard touchdown down run by Clark. Beal threw the two-point conversion pass to Avent and the Eagles led 28-14. A perfect onside kick by Braxton Bradshaw was recovered by Ty Gwyn. East had a lengthy drive that resulted in no points, but ate up a lot of the clock.
Early in the fourth quarter, Clark broke loose on a 33-yard touchdown run. Later in the quarter, Jayden Shirley scored on a one-yard run to push the lead to 42-14. Parkland scored on a short run with 30 seconds left in the game.
The Eagle JV team (3-2) will play at home against Northwest Guilford on Thursday at 7 p.m.
