The Colorado Buffaloes football quarterback carousel continues to go round and round. This will be the second season that Deion Sanders and his offensive coordinator have switched out the starting signal-caller because of the lack of success during a game. Coach Prime has stated in the past that he knows what a pro looks like, but has yet to know what a quarterback looks like, which isn’t Shedeur Sanders.
There is no question that Deion Sanders has been able to recruit players for the Buffs, but their lack of scheme and coaching has the program competing to be the best last-place team in the Big 12 conference this season. Coach Prime's mindset is to recruit the players to play for the program, then bring in a new offensive or defensive coordinator with hopes of success.
He failed at every turn. Especially when it comes to the quarterback position. When Shedeur Sanders was CU's starting quarterback, he was provided every tool needed to break school records and be successful. When Kaidon Salter arrived last season as a dual-threat quarterback, the offense that was being run under Pat Shurmur showed how slowly plays progressed for Salter to make a decision when throwing passes to the Buffs receivers.
Now we have the Go-Go offense that averages 10 points a game against Power 4 football programs this season. Julian Lewis was benched for Texas Tech in place of Isaac Wilson, who played a terrible game. Under the circumstances, he completed 26-of-44 passes for 290 yards, four interceptions with one for a pick six. Wilson, who is considered a dual-threat quarterback who can extend plays, did just that on their touchdown drive in the game. The Go-Go offense should have fit Wilson well on Saturday. However, Texas Tech made the necessary in-game and at-halftime adjustments to keep the Buffs' offense from scoring any more points in the game.
Colorado is learning a tough lesson about what their team's offensive identity is, and what it will be as a team. The motivational speeches become tone-deaf to quarterbacks when their head coach sells a dream that won’t come true. Because these quarterbacks and other athletes on the team are looking to fulfill their NFL dreams. The only option they have is to leave. If you need an example to see how well a former Buffs quarterback is doing on the professional level, take a look at Salter, who took advantage of his opportunity with the BC Lions and set a single-game franchise record by rushing for 160 yards on 10 carries.
Lewis, who played alongside Salter last season, saw firsthand that a message was being sent to him when the team passed the ball 44 times in a game, which they had not done all season long, when they were making the rush the priority. The carousel of quarterbacks will continue, and the next question is who will start at the quarterback position in two weeks against the Utah Utes?
Will they go back to Lewis or start the freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne? Get ready to see the Colorado football quarterback carousel continue to go round and round for the rest of the season. More games will end like the 29-7 Texas Tech loss.
