That was a crazy Saturday of college football. Of course, it feels like we say that most weeks. And trying to say Week 7 was crazier than other Saturdays seems silly. So the team at College Football Sunday Summary is going to just say they are all crazy, and we are going to throw up a bunch of stop signs today.
College Football Sunday Summary
Your Losing Makes Us Stop
Five of last week’s AP Top 10 lost. Some now have multiple losses already. Thank goodness we won’t have to worry about this with the expansion of the college football playoff starting next year. Three- and four-loss teams will be readily welcome, as long as they are from the correct conference.
Speaking of which, stop expanding the playoff and racking it up to more access for more schools. You don’t mean more G6 schools. You mean more Power Four schools, so stop acting like you are so benevolent.
Stop the Hype Train
Texas is a dog. Stop putting so much hype in the Longhorns’ food dish. And while we are at it, we are going to throw up a stop sign on quarterback hype trains. Yes, we are looking at you, Arch Manning. You are a perfectly average quarterback. Congratulations. Your time as a practice squad quarterback in the NFL will be well guided by those skills. But you have now lost back-to-back games in crunch time. Heisman and Arch Manning are words that don’t go together.
And here comes the irate UGA fan, but neither do Heisman and Gunner Stockton, so stop putting them together. Stockton’s passing yards are perfectly average. When the national stats get updated sometime later today, he will be somewhere in the top 20, like in the 15th to 20th range. And few can win and lose the same game the way Stockton does. Yes, he had 267 yards and two touchdown passes. But he also had two interceptions, two sacks (one of which was his fault), and the ghastly fumble late in the game where he ran up the back of the offensive lineman in front of him. Georgia is a very good team. Gunner Stockton is not elite, so stop making him sound like he is.

Stop Ignoring
While you were busy giving so much misguided love to Arch Manning and Gunner Stockton, you were ignoring Bear Bachmeier. The hour of many BYU games means many of you have yet to make the effort to appreciate his work. His passing yards are not mind-blowing and may barely reach the top 20. But on Saturday, in Prime Time, against Notre Dame, he threw for a touchdown, rushed for two touchdowns, and caught a touchdown pass. Yes, coach Kilani Sitake put him out wide. He caught the ball and ran it in from 20 yards out. We are not saying he is Heisman material. He doesn’t have the total passing yardage. But he influences a game to the positive side far more than our aforementioned overly hyped players.
Stop Pretending Like You Don’t See the Work He is Doing
There are five undefeated Power 4 schools left. And none of them are from the SEC. We know we are about to hear about how tough the SEC is every week, and blah, blah, blah. You either are, or you aren’t. And the SEC schools aren’t…undefeated.
One of the schools that is still undefeated is in the Big 10. It’s not Ohio State or Indiana or anyone else you imagine. It’s UCLA. The Bruins are 6-0 after beating Wisconsin at home on Saturday. Stop pretending you don’t see what Bob Chesney is doing as a coach at the P4 level. He took over a program that was a train wreck right out of the movie The Fugitive, and he has them undefeated through the first half of the season.
Did any of the other coaches win with some dude named Ty Dieffenbach at quarterback? No, they did not, because none of them knew who he was. He was playing his college ball at Cal Poly. In Saturday’s win at the Rose Bowl, he was 22 of 33 passing for 264 yards. Now we are not going to stop overhyping. After all, he is not named Manning. But can we at least acknowledge that Chesney took a bunch of players who survived the train wreckage, got some fresh bodies from the portal, made them believe they could compete with anyone, and has yet to be disproved?
By the way, the other undefeated teams belong to the ACC (Miami) and the Big 12 (BYU, Texas Tech, and Utah).
Stop Shaking Celebrity Hands, Mr. Referee
After yanking potential victory, we said potential, from the jaws of their mascot horse, don’t then shake hands with a Hall of Famer from the other school.
Florida State had Miami in double overtime. The Seminoles were down by eight. Ashton Daniels heaved a 40-yard pass into the end zone that was caught for a touchdown. But there was a dubious holding call against Florida State.
Daniels delivered again, from 50 yards. Hurricanes defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald and Florida State wide receiver Duce Robinson both had their hands on the ball. It was ruled a game-ending interception.
Hey, these things happen every week. But then it would be best if the referee did not stop on his way off the field to shake the hand of Miami legend Michael Irvin. We at Sunday Summary do not own tin foil hats, and we do not believe in conspiracy theories. But that is just a really bad look.
Stop Overlooking
As a final note, it is worth mentioning that Kentucky is tied for the lead in the SEC race. UCLA is tied for the lead in the Big 10 race. And Wake Forest is in second place in the ACC, just one game behind undefeated Miami.
We should probably pay more attention.
Fashion Faux Pas and Fashion Forward
As you, we like to dedicate the last section every week to some new looks for alternate game uniforms for schools. This week we have two.
Coastal Carolina lost to App State Friday night. They also lost any street cred they had when the Chanticleers wore a throwback to the ‘ 90s-themed uniform. None of the current players were born in the ‘90s. Heck, there is a chance their parents didn’t even know each other yet. So they have no idea how bad the uniforms looked, and how much worse it was made by playing on the Teel Turf.

And then we move to the other coast. The Cal Bears were doing a tribute to the legendary Bay Area band The Grateful Dead. The Grateful Bears were the official theme. They could have gone off the deep end with tie-dye jerseys, we suppose. But they kept it to the helmets (along with new merchandise for sale). The Grateful Dead logo on both sides of the helmet. And the Cal Bear mixed in with the Grateful Dead’s iconic dancing bears on the back. Even though we are not Cal fans, there is some cool merch available, and the Sunday Summary team will be checking credit card statements for available balances.
