The Arizona State and University of Arizona football programs are going to have twice the chance to qualify for the College Football Playoff next season, with multiple outlets reporting the proposed expansion to 24 teams will take effect in 2027.

The Sun Devils made a memorable run to the CFP in 2024 behind Cam Skattebo and Sam Leavitt, but are not seen as a conference title contender this season, with a big game at Texas Tech coming Saturday, Oct. 17, in Lubbock, Texas.

Arizona, behind quarterback Noah Fifita, is a fringe Top 25 team and remains in title contention with an off week coming.

ESPN's Pete Thamel broke the news on the plan to expand the CFP.

The network said in its report that it is working to finish an agreement with the CFP to buy the added games. The proposed deal would run through 2031.

It remains unclear what the format would be, with an extra round needed — at least.

The existing format, 12 teams, is now in its third year. The postseason tournament had four teams from 2014-23.
