It has been a rocky first seven games for the Tigers.
Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds has struggled mightily in his first collegiate season, throwing just one passing touchdown throughout the Tigers’ first seven contests.
Reynolds has been far from efficient as well, tossing three interceptions with a 32.8 QBR that ranks outside the top 120 nationally.
Head coach Dabo Swinney’s offense is extremely one-dimensional, relying heavily on sophomore tailback Gideon Davidson, who’s not having a great campaign either.
Davidson has rushed for 492 yards with five rushing touchdowns on 93 carries. Still, not particularly impressive either when you compare Davidson’s stats on a national scale.
This offense is completely lost out there and now must travel into a very challenging conference showdown in Tallahassee.
On the defensive side of the ball, Clemson has been far better, allowing its opponents just over 21 points per game over the first seven contests of the season.
The ‘Noles offense will be a very tough challenge for Clemson’s defense, especially after they nearly upset top-ranked Miami on the road just two weeks ago.
Despite Clemson’s struggles, it’s actually Florida State that has the worse regular-season record despite opening as a 6-point favorite this week.
Quarterback Ashton Daniels has been quite impressive over his first seven games as a Seminole after transferring from Auburn via the portal.
Daniels ranks inside the top 40 among quarterbacks with 1,618 passing yards and 12 touchdown passes on the season. However, turnovers have been a problem for him, throwing eight interceptions.
That said, Daniels still boasts an extremely impressive 81.9 QBR, ranking 16th among all quarterbacks.
A great deal of Daniels’ success has resulted from the sizable contributions made by star wide receiver Duce Robinson, who has racked up over 400 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
FSU’s rushing attack was quite stable until it wasn’t. Sophomore running back Ousmane Kromah was in the midst of a breakout season until a broken ankle knocked him out for the remainder of the season.
With Kromah’s absence, it falls on the back of Texas transfer Quintrevion Wisner, who has been effective as well, rushing for over 200 yards on just 38 carries this season.
Wisner does have experience as a bell-cow, though, running for over 1,000 yards in his second year with the Longhorns.
Florida State has been far more vulnerable defensively, allowing its first seven opponents of the season nearly 28 points per game (27.9).
Fortunately for FSU, the ‘Noles defense has a prime bounce-back opportunity on Saturday night given how poorly Reynolds has played.
We’re in for a great one on Saturday night in a prime-time spot featuring two rivals.
While some may be surprised by the Seminoles’ standing as a six-point favorite over a Clemson bunch with a superior record, I disagree and expect the prime-time slot to give Florida State a considerable edge playing in front of a packed home crowd.
Despite the ‘Noles sub-.500 record and the fact they’re currently on a two-game skid, I was very impressed with the way head coach Mike Norvell’s offense looked against Miami.
Though Florida State’s defense is undoubtedly weak, Reynolds has looked awful, and this matchup looks like such a prime bounce-back spot for the Seminoles.
While I’m not crazy about laying 6 points on Florida State, I’m confident they win the game outright, so I’m electing to wager on Seminoles moneyline at -210.
Pick: Florida State ML (-210)
