After a few chaotic weeks of college football, Week 5 felt much more like business as usual. There were not as many high-quality matchups this week, which leaves the field mostly the same as the week before.
My CFP projections after Week 5:
- P4 Champions: Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, Utah
- G6 Leader: Boise State
- At-Larges: Texas, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama, BYU, Ole Miss, LSU
- Outside Looking In: Texas Tech, Florida, Oregon, Missouri, Tennessee
Some notes from Week 5:
- Florida’s ugly 45-17 loss to Missouri bumped them out of a playoff spot for now. The Gators still have to feel good about the future of the program under new head coach Jon Sumrall, but Saturday served as a reality check that they may not be ready for the big stage just yet.
- Ohio State picked up a solid win for its resume with a one-sided 31-14 win at Iowa. The Buckeyes appeared to fix some of their defensive issues, particularly against the run, though they still have games against Indiana, Oregon, and USC remaining.
- The Big 12 is still a puzzle I cannot solve. BYU looked mortal in its 17-10 win over TCU. Texas Tech trailed in the second half against Colorado and struggled to move the ball consistently without the help of turnovers against a weak Buffaloes team. I still think Utah is the best overall team in this conference, but the biggest conference games have yet to be played.
- Overall, no real changes this week outside of LSU replacing Florida in my projected at-large field.
