CBS Sports identifies Florida-Georgia as pivotal Week 9 CFP matchup

CBS Sports names Florida-Georgia among Week 9's biggest college football impact games.

The Gators' SEC showdown with Kirby Smart's Bulldogs was identified as one of six games capable of reshaping the College Football Playoff race. The matchup is listed alongside Texas Tech vs. Arizona, Wisconsin vs. Iowa, Miami vs. North Carolina, Ohio State vs. USC, and Utah vs. Cincinnati; all games that could help paint the picture of this year's bracket.

Jon Sumrall and Co. revived their postseason hopes after upsetting Texas on the road in Week 7. A win against No. 3 Georgia would strongly position the No. 20 Gators to control their own destiny as the season wanes, while a second consecutive defeat for Georgia would be potentially costly but might not dismiss UGA from the conversation entirely.

"Florida had a miserable couple of weeks to start October, but the Gators are rounding into form at the right time. Backup quarterback Tramell Jones helped lead a massive upset of No. 7 Texas, which brings the Gators right back into the conversation," wrote college football writer Shehan Jeyarajah.

Jeyarajah also points out that backup quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. helped rescue the Gators' season with a strong showing in Austin. The first-year QB went 22-for-35 for 155 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 52 net rushing yards.

It remains to be seen whether Jones will make his second start on Saturday or if Sumrall will opt for Aaron Philo. The Bogart, Georgia, native helped guide Florida to a 4-0 start and has 1,341 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

"Florida has wins over Ole Miss and Texas on their resume, but a win over Georgia would help cement them in the home stretch, with a road game against No. 9 Kentucky still remaining," Jeyarajah concluded.

Should the Gators navigate a win in Atlanta, they still have Kentucky on the horizon after a home stand against Oklahoma.
