It has been quite a volatile season thus far for the Auburn Tigers, who enter their Week 9 SEC clash with Ole Miss with a 4-3 record on the season.

In what marked a new era for this program, first-year head coach Alex Golesh was brought in this past offseason to take over the reins as Auburn’s head coach following an abysmal three-year stretch under Hugh Freeze that saw the Tigers win just 15 of their 34 games over that duration.

Golesh gained a great reputation as a sharp offensive-minded coach after a very successful stint as head coach at South Florida.

Much of that can be attributed to the phenomenal play under center from dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown, who followed Golesh to Auburn from USF.

The Tigers’ first-year head coach has done a stellar job installing an explosive veer-and-shoot offense, which is a far more modern spread offense that uses extreme receiver splits and a fast tempo to stress defenses both horizontally and vertically.

After upsetting top-ranked Georgia in Week 7 as a massive road underdog, Auburn lost in an ultimate letdown spot, getting absolutely trounced by LSU.

Though Brown has made far more of an impact for this Auburn offense on the ground with a whopping 481 rushing yards and six touchdowns, his passing mechanics are rather unpredictable.

In Week 8, Brown completed 15 of his 24 pass attempts without recording a touchdown or interception — although, he added a rushing score of his own.

Now, the Tigers find their backs against the wall, having to go on the road to face an extremely motivated Ole Miss team in Oxford after the Rebels fell to Texas in Week 8.

The odds are definitely stacked against the Tigers on Saturday night.

It has been a hectic last nine months for Ole Miss following its College Football Playoff run that was overshadowed by now-LSU head coach Lane Kiffin’s decision to leave the program before its matchup against eventual runner-up Miami.

While many expected a down year for the Rebels in Pete Golding’s first year at the helm, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss led the charge in a phenomenal upset victory over then-No. 7 LSU in what was undoubtedly a bittersweet moment for the Rebels.

However, that winning feeling faded rather quickly in their first true road test of the season. Ole Miss fell, 52-28, in a blowout loss to Florida in Gainesville.

The Rebels went on to win two of their next three games, taking down both Vanderbilt and Missouri before losing a heartbreaker to Texas this past Saturday in Week 8.

There’s no doubt that Chambliss will be extremely motivated following last week’s loss to the Longhorns.

The Rebels’ senior star continues to light it up under center, throwing for 1,926 yards, which ranks inside the top 25 among all quarterbacks.

Despite Chambliss being susceptible to turning the ball over — he has seven interceptions already this season — Chambliss has remained very efficient in the pocket with a 79.7 QBR, ranking 19th in all of college football.

Given the 12th-ranked Rebels still have to face Georgia in Week 10, Saturday’s clash with Auburn is certainly a must-win game for Ole Miss’ College Football Playoff aspirations.

While it appeared that Auburn was on its way toward the top of the SEC following its heroic road victory in Athens, the “War Eagle” chants came to a halt when it got blasted by Kiffin’s LSU squad.

Now, Auburn has to go back on the road and face an Ole Miss team that should be highly motivated after its loss to Texas last Saturday night.

With that motivation narrative in play, I’ll back Ole Miss to cover the 3.5-point first-quarter spread at +100.

As a secondary betting angle, I feel confident betting on Chambliss to throw at least three passing touchdowns at a stellar +145 price in a game I expect Golding’s bunch to light up the scoreboard.

Given that Rebels running back Kewan Lacy has been on and off the injury report over the last few weeks, I expect Chambliss to throw the ball a ton on Saturday.

Pick: Ole Miss 1Q -3.5 (+100) · Trinidad Chambliss Over 2.5 Passing TDs (+145)
