Texas A&M's 2026 season has been an utter disaster so far, with the Aggies at 3-3 and 1-3 in SEC play after Saturday's 27-6 blowout road loss to Missouri. Third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff will do everything they can to turn things around, but several of the program's 2027 commits are weighing their options, including four-star linebacker Ashton Whiteside.
Whiteside committed to the Aggies over Kentucky back on June 1, feeling that Mike Elko and linebackers coach Travis Williams would put him on the development fast track, but given his rising status and Texas A&M's struggles this season, Whiteside will reportedly visit Miami this weekend when the No. 3-ranked Hurricanes host Florida State this weekend.
A native of Burleson, Texas, Whiteside has not shut down his recruitment and will consider other options, a possibility that existed regardless of the Aggies' struggles this season. Speaking with Rivals recruiting expert Sam Spiegelman, Whiteside said Miami has been recruiting him for quite some time, like Texas A&M's top-ranked 2027 commit, five-star OL Mark Matthews.
"Miami has never stopped recruiting me since I committed with A&M,” Whiteside stated to Rivals. “What stands out to me is the talent there and the way that Miami competes. The direction that the program is going is exciting. Coming off a season where they competed for a national championship, you can tell they’re building something special.”
The key phrase is "direction of the program," which can be questioned in College Station, even though Mike Elko deserves more time to fix current issues after leading the Aggies to their first College Football Playoff appearance last season.
Ashton Whiteside is one of three linebacker commits in Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked class, alongside five-star Kaden Henderson and four-star Mikahi Allen.
